AbstractTitanium matrix composites (TMCs) are under popular development for enhanced engineering applications. TMCs of much improved mechanical properties can be manufactured on a large scale in an existing titanium plant by the in-situ technique based on the consumable VAR process. Although a number of challenges still exists, the novel composite processing technology offers a very attractive solution to industrial demands for cost effective titanium-based materials.
