Abstract1. The 13-item Chinese version of the Attitudes to Starting Insulin Questionnaire has reliable psychometric properties and an interpretable and relevant structure. It can be used by clinicians to assess psychological barriers to insulin treatment in Chinese patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus in primary care settings. 2. The most significant barriers to starting insulin treatment in Chinese patients with poorly controlled type-2 diabetes mellitus appear to be fear of pain and needles and perceived insufficient social support. Women are more negative towards starting insulin treatment.
