AbstractThe crude and rapid urbanization causes the damage to natural resources, the high cost of living, the low public resources per capital, the severe competition in workplace, and many other social and environmental problems. These problems have significant negative impacts on citizens’ health, especially mental health. This paper demonstrates the critical contribution of urban nature on promoting mental health through analysis of three key mechanisms: the stress relief, social capital promotion, and attention restoration. In order to protect and improve citizens’ mental health, we need to take key actions across the individual, neighborhoods, and city scales.
