AbstractBuilding facades create the tangible character of our built environment, and in historic districts the decorative history of a facade can carry evidence of historical and scientific research value. Plaster and paint materials in historic districts often have unique regional characteristics. Even if the current condition shows multiple alterations and use of modern repair materials, in most cases, traces of original plaster and paint materials are still evident and can be identified through scientific investigations. Scientific methods include on-site investigation and core sampling as well as analysis of plaster composition, adhesives and pigments in the laboratory. The scientific investigation of architectural surfaces and knowledge on traditional materials and techniques is an important aspect of understanding and conserving our cultural heritage. During the restoration, scientific analysis of the original materials provides the basis for sustainable interventions. Using plaster and paint materials as close as possible to the original materials not only respects the material culture and aesthetic of the heritage resource, but also guarantees compatibility with the existing historic structure and local environment.
