Abstract | Studies of Ling Shuhua’s fiction mostly focus on how her work reflects the situation of Chinese women in the May 4th movement, as well as how Ling’s upper-middle class background has affected her writing. Existing scholarship is less concerned about her stylistic consideration, such as how different elements create tensions and how readers might react during their reading. This dissertation examines Ling’s various considerations in her creative writing. Employing the tension theory of new criticism and reader-response criticism, it explores how tension is created in Ling’s selected love and marriage fiction.
