AbstractUnderground development sounds difficult to get implemented in Hong Kong with densely populations and lands. In fact, Hong Kong has great potential to develop underground rock caverns. In this study, it presents how to utilize the cavern in Hong Kong from a geotechnical engineering view. Different kinds of cavern shapes and discontinuities conditions are examined by several design factors to evaluate their relationship and to suggest effective ways to optimize the cavern design.
