AbstractFrom the mid-fifteenth to the late-sixteenth centuries, the Ottoman Empire tried to sustain her intercontinental shipping by restructuring Islamic trade across the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. The Empire divided the trade zones into four districts: (1) Algiers and Istanbul; (2) Aden and Hormuz; (3) Cambay and Calicut; and (4) Malacca and Canton / Quanzhou. This paper will discuss the privateering of Ottoman seafarers Kemal Reis (1451-1511), Pirî Reis (b. 1465-1470 and d. 1553) and Hayreddin Barbarossa (c. 1478-1546) as well as their later lives as admirals in the Ottoman Navy to sail in the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean.
