Abstract

This entry provides a general overview of urban morphology, covering the contributions of the three pioneering schools: Italian, British, and French. An overview of the main theoretical traditions is followed by a discussion of the fundamental shift in focus that sees the linking of urban morphology to impacts and a corresponding change in methodology. Finally, the entry examines the main challenges faced by theoretical and empirical research.
