Abstract | Introduction: AFP level has beenconsistently shown to be correlated with the outcomes of HCC after resection but it is not commonly used as a selection criteria forliver transplantation.
Patients and methods: Retrospective study of a prospectively collecteddatabase of all HCC patients who underwent liver transplantation at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong was performed. Multivariateanalysis was performed to identify the risk factors associated with recurrenceof HCC amongst the patients with AFP >=400ng/ml.
Result: 46 out of 326 (14.1%) HCC patients who underwent livertransplantation in our hospital has pre-operative AFP level >=400ng/ml (range411-117850) (HAFP group). The median follow up was 60.5 months. The 1-, 3- and5-year overall survival was significantly worse for the HAFP group comparedwith patients with AFP level < 400ng/ml (LAFP group) (95.6%, 72.9% and 59.7%vs 95%, 86.3% and 82.9%, p < 0.001). |
