AbstractTOD and green urbanism have been globally popular as sustainable urban development models. These days, the ideas of “green structures and design” and “eco-community” built upon environmental benefits are getting increasing attentions in urban planning. This dissertation addresses the discussion on application of Green Transit-Oriented Development (Green TOD) model in Guangzhou by analyzing the operation of Guangzhou Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System and the planning and implement of Guangzhou Haizhu Eco-city. This dissertation establishes an evaluation system/framework involving economic, environmental and social indicators to evaluate the case of Guangzhou BRT as a prototypical application of sustainable transport of Green TODs in China and the case of Haizhu Eco-city as a prototypical application of Green TOD model in Guangzhou. Finally, based on the lessons learned from the experiences of Guangzhou and other cities with the BRT system or eco-city, this dissertation claims that Guangzhou BRT showcases the successful application of Green TOD in Guangzhou’s sustainable development and can be a model for fast-growing cities in the developing world. In addition, the experience of Haizhu Eco-city can be a sample to replicate to the whole Guangzhou city, especially areas with ample natural resources and land storages, and will probably be an available model of application of Green TOD in Chinese cities.
