AbstractBackground: The world is facing a rapid aging population that arise an important public health issue of senior mental health problem. Volunteer is an effective means to improve overall health status of the senior population by promoting active aging. Understanding the mechanisms and associations between volunteering activities and its effects is critical for senior volunteering development. The primary objective of this review is to investigate the association of participating in volunteering work with improving mental health among older people. Methods: A systematic review of 4 databases (Medline, EMBASE (1980-Present), PsycINFO and ASSIA) was done to search for studies that examined the effect of volunteering on senior people’s mental health outcomes. Data was collected on the characteristics of the studies and participants, volunteer status, and mental health outcome measures. Results: Nine studies were identified. Compared with non-volunteers, participation in volunteering activities was associated with desired mental health outcomes, higher life satisfaction and self-esteem. Volunteering was associated with less depressive symptoms. Conclusion: The association between participation in volunteering work and mental health among older people suggests that mental health programs for seniors should encourage senior volunteerism. Further studies should explore how participation in volunteer activities affect senior mental health.
