AbstractThis presentation seeks to reflect on the methodology of my research on the everyday geopolitics of cross-border tourism between China and Taiwan. It re-considers the rationale for adopting solely qualitative methods in the quest to move away from state/economic-centric and ‘peace through tourism’ approaches to the study of cross-strait tourism. Discussions on tourists’ subjectivities show that far from being passive ‘numbers’ or ‘flows’, cross-strait tourists are shaped by and actively shaping the rapprochement landscape. However, I shall re-visit the challenges of and opportunities for incorporating quantitative methods in the study of non-state actors in cross-strait relations. Topics related to uniqueness and generalization of empirical data will also be addressed. Lastly, I am happy to listen to suggestions and ideas on alternative pathways of conducting such research.
