Many Chinese characters are given surprisingly different Cantonese pronunciations in commonly used dictionaries in Hong Kong. Reasons for such differences include the influence of fanqies from traditional rime dictionaries and the selection of tong change in spoken language. This paper analyzes a number of pronunciation differences in those dictionaries and evaluates the rationale behind their pronunciation standards.
