AbstractIn contrast to the modern Theravada conceptualization, the early Buddhist discourses give more emphasis to the preservation of the Dhamma through the lineages of the experiencers called dwellers in the Dhamma, and as such the monks are given the total responsibility of this task. The preservation implies that the monks not only learn and teach the Dhamma but also practice and experience it. In this way, the Dhamma will continue both externally and internally being exemplified in the lives of the monks. Realization is the goal of preservation; the study and practice are the means to that realization.
