AbstractResilience engineering has been a hot topic in safety engineering. Traditional safety engineering methods, including component-based safety engineering approaches and system safety engineering approaches, focus on maintaining systems in a safe state, in particular aiming to maintain systems to be reliable and robust. However, resilience cannot be absent from safety out of many recent disasters that occur in society. This paper summarizes the origin and development of resilience concept in different disciplines and corresponding definitions in these different contexts. The definition of resilience engineering is further discussed by presenting the evolution of safety engineering, followed by a brief review of methods used to measure and enhance the resilience of a system. Conclusions as well as the limitations of current literature are also discussed in the last section.
