AbstractThis paper reviews the use of questionnaires in Language Learner Strategy (LLS) research. It starts with a brief overview of popular methods in LLS research, with a focus on the use of questionnaires/survey tools, and then presents five criticisms concerning the wide and uncritical use of questionnaires in LLS research. While the paper fully acknowledges the valuable contributions made by survey studies in the past, as well as their potential in the future, it calls for a change from the current over-dependence on questionnaires towards the use of multi-method and qualitative approaches in LLS research.
