Reconstruction of cognition and restoration of relationships – CBT group for problem gamblers

Abstract

CBT is an effective approach for treating pathological gamblers overseas. This project is the first attempt to treat culturally-specific group – Chinese pathological gamblers in Hong Kong. We brought a number of local participants together to increase their awareness of how their gambling behavior impacts their life and that of their family members. During the sessions we looked into the individual thought processes, identifying the underlying gambling myths to gambling in Chinese addicted gamblers, challenges the Chinese ethic group and makes them more susceptible and possibly more vulnerable to the harms of gambling. A number of particular high risks situations were highlighted that need to be avoided, as well as particular triggers and urges that affect different individuals. We converted our findings into a measurable & scientific group study. Repeated occurrence of this behaviour can be traced back to the client’s core beliefs and values. We then examined what make these individuals exhibit particular behavioral reactions and responses. Throughout the group sessions we continuously look at different methods for self help, gaining further insights on how one can break away from these cyclical behavioral patterns relating to the problem gambling and to bring across alternative activities and choices to the clients undertaking the sessions. In our study, the individuals were able to begin to pin point their problems and move towards the goals of a new and healthier self.
