AbstractThis dissertation is an attempt to study the history of The Wharf (Holdings) Limited (in short The Wharf)that The Wharf has witnessed the growth and development of Hong Kong from a small fishery village island to a well-known entrepot of the world and The Wharf has also played a very important role in contribution for the port of Hong Kong; the founder and the establishment of The Wharf; the up and down of the Hong Kong’s economy; the setup and building of the Kwai Chung Container Terminal; the reform of The Wharf from wharf and warehouse business to a luxury commercial and residential complex; Sir Yue Kong Pao challenges Jardine Matheson in taking over The Wharf, Jardine Matheson’s flag ship. This dissertation consists of six chapters of study to support my research for the Historical Study of The Wharf (Holdings) Limited: The first chapter is to study the geographical area, its particular environment and the harbor of the Hong Kong Island; how Britain forces Qing Dynasty to cede Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula and the lease of New Territories to Britain as her colony. The second chapter is to study the early day’s establishment and development of The Wharf (Holdings) Ltd. The third chapter is to study the revolutionary reform of the world’s shipping industry, the creation of container ships The fourth chapter is to study the setup and the building of the Container Terminal at Kwai Chung district. The fifth chapter is to study the relationship between The Wharf (Holdings) Ltd. and Jardine Matheson The sixth chapter is to study the rise of Chinese merchants, Pao, Yue Kong taking over The Wharf (Holdings) Ltd., the flag ship of Jardine Matheson.
