Abstract | In 2003 the SARS coronavirus seemingly appeared out of nowhere, overwhelming local public health and medical services before hitching an international ride to thirty seven countries. Fearful citizens watched the infection play out in the media, with many commentators predicting that this might be 'the big one', the long-awaited doomsday panic. Drawing on extensive media reports, as well as the scientific literature, this paper explores the divergence between the actual number of those who succumbed to SARS (774 victims) and the specter of mass mortality, which the epidemic triggered. |
