AbstractWhat is the value of diversity? This seems like a simple question, yet the complications of diversity are many. In this chapter we review relevant diversity literature from social psychological and organizational scholars highlighting the newly emerging perspectives on diversity. The common wisdom that diversity is beneficial because people who are “different” will bring different perspectives to the table is systematically examined and shown to fall short of explaining the benefits of diversity. We focus first on the socio-cognitive and motivational processes that drive the behavior of individuals in diverse settings and then on directions for future research including the status distance experienced in diverse settings.
