AbstractIn the present study, a cost effective method of removing NOx in a water installed in a ferry was investigated by installing a novel NOx reduction water which oxidizes the NO (the main nitrogen oxides component) in the exhaust gas to NO2, which is then removed by seawater in the scrubber. A series of sea trials have been conducted under different operation conditions and the results were satisfactory. The maximum NO and NOx removal efficiency of 70% and 65% respectively, can be achieved under low speed operation condition. The removal efficiency can be enhanced further by increasing the retention time of the scrubber. This together with the removal capability of SO2, particulate matter and HC previously found in the scrubber, is considered to be one of the best technologies that can have the capability to effectively remove most of the pollutants simultaneously in marine exhausts.
