Abstract | Quarries have been existing in Hong Kong long before the British came and quality granite was one of the earliest products exported to other parts of the world. The practice of quarrying in Hong Kong can be classified into different periods and the first hundred years saw the domination by the Chinese businessmen with very few exceptions. The reconstruction of Hong Kong after Second World War and the various boom and recession contributed to the set up of large-scale quarries and extensive use of mechanical plant. The quarried rock initially used for building works were small-sized aggregates for concrete production and precast concrete products, and more attention has now been paid to environmental concern and rehabilitation of quarries. The talk will cover the development of the quarry industry including examples of infrastructure development in Hong Kong. |
