AbstractThis paper aims to prove that the semantic behaviour of LAI in Mandarin Chinese changes as it assumes different grammatical positions in serial verb constructions. A synchronic analysis of Chinese linguistic data shows that LAI must have undergone the three stages of syntactic reanalysis postulated in Xing (2003), namely, serialization, decentralization and functionalization.
