AbstractAs the world becomes increasingly interconnected, students are looking to add international experiences to their educational programs. In some cases, students hope to work abroad upon graduation, while many others recognize the value of an international experience regardless of where they plan to ultimately work. Given the increased interest in international learning, many social work programs now offer, or are interested in developing, educational “on-the-ground” experiences for students. These experiences vary widely and may include opportunities to attend an international conference, faculty led trips, alternative breaks, or opportunities to complete coursework or a field internship abroad. In this session, learn how the University of Hong Kong, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Michigan have developed institutional partnerships that provide Master of Social Work (MSW) students in their programs the opportunity to complete one semester of the required field internship abroad. Learn why each institution is invested in this type of international experience for students and how it has helped to internationalize their programs and student experiences. This presentation will include an overview of how each university is structured, how they are staffed, and how they fund their exchange programs. Each program will share how they prepare students for the international experience and how they help “unpack” this experience upon their return. Attendees will learn how the field internship sites and student work are monitored and graded. In addition each university will share information on how they handle the health and safety issues associated with offering a global field internship program. Lastly, presenters will emphasize the importance of setting and managing realistic expectations with students to ensure their success. The session will include a discussion of lessons learned, as well as ample time for discussion and a question and answer period.
