AbstractMaculalactone M, a seco-dibenzyldiphenyl-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzofuranone, was isolated from the epilithic encrusting cyanobacterium Kyrtuthrix maculans. A possible biogenetic route to this compound is proposed involving cleavage of an allylic hydroperoxide.
