AbstractMultiple methods such as geological and geophysical prospecting, experimental study and numerical analysis have been employed to investigate the mechanical behavior of the rockmass in the central barrier between the temporary shiplock and the shiplift of the Three Gorges Project (TGP). Main results are as follows: (1) there exists an inverted 'U' shaped disturbed zone in the middle and upper parts of the barrier due to the effects of blasting and stress relief, (2) the disturbed rock mass differs from the original one in that its joints open and its rock blocks slide along the primary structural planes with the mechanical properties of the rock blocks unaffected basically and no secondary structural planes generated, (3) the scope and shape of the disturbed zone are well coincident with those of the damaged area of tension and shear.
