AbstractAs well as causing significant morbidity and mortality, osteoporosis places a huge financial burden on the NHS. This article looks at the structure and function of bone and how it is weakened by the ageing process. It discusses the various risk factors associated with the disease and the types of fractures that occur typically as a result of weakened bones. Diagnosis of the condition is also described. A second article (p216) covers screening for and treatment of osteoporosis, and discusses the role of the pharmacist.
