AbstractThe present experiments were designed to investigate whether acetylcholine affects the responsiveness of blood vessels to K+. Helical strips of saphenous veins and of pulmonary and tibial arteries, and longitudinal strips of mesenteric veins were studied in an organ chamber at 37°C; changes in isometric tension were recorded. The present experiments indicate that acetylcholine inhibits the release of adrenergic neurotransmitter caused by depolarization of the nerve endings in different blood vessel preparations, as it does during nerve stimulation.
