AbstractExperiments on the isolated saphenous vein of dogs indicate that halothane causes dilatation of cutaneous veins by inhibiting transmission of the sympathetic impulses, rather than by an inhibitory effect on the smooth cells, and suggest that the agent acts to inhibit the release of neurotransmitter associated with nerve terminal depolarization. In addition halothane can reversibly inhibit monoamine oxidase activity in peripheral veins.
