AbstractThis paper addresses the problem of optimal coordination of dissimilar voltage control actions in security control of power systems. A framework for hybrid dynamical control based on coordination of controls with different response time and dynamic characteristics is presented. The proposed method accounts for both static and dynamic aspects of the voltage control problem. A security constrained steady-state approach is first used to determine the structure of the optimal control sequence, in terms of the type and amount of control, needed to provide stability and desired security margin. Dynamic analysis based on the dynamic sensitivity method is then carried out to verify the statically obtained schedule and complement it with the optimal value of switching times. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.
