AbstractReducing cost and increasing productivity is always the goal of the industry. In traditional manufacturing, considerable cost is consumed on assembly. With the emergence of rapid prototyping (RP), product development shows a new way and assembly process is possible to be eliminated. In this paper, the possibility is investigated and a scheme based on assembly CAD solid model is proposed. Assemblies after redesign have simplified structures and less number of parts and can be fabricated in one go in a RP machine. Multiple material issue is also addressed in this paper.
