Abstract | Adiponectin is an oligomeric adipokine possessing a myriad of beneficial activities against obesity-related medical complications. Abnormal circulating adiponectin levels are closely associated with the development of chronic liver diseases, including non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis and cirrhosis, as well as hepatocellular carcinoma. The hepatoprotective functions of adiponectin have been demonstrated by numerous clinical, pharmacological and genetic investigations. This review will provide an update on the pathophysiological role of adiponectin in liver and the molecular mechanisms underlying its metabolic and anti-inflammatory activities. The potentials for adiponectin-based therapeutic interventions for chronic liver diseases will also be discussed. |
