Biography

Dr Joseph Lui obtained his basic medical qualification at University of Sydney, Australia in 1981. After that, he underwent vocational training in Anaesthesiology in Australia and Hong Kong and qualified as a specialist anaesthesiologist in 1988. He also did 2 years of post fellowship training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia at Grantham Hospital, Hong Kong. He was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist at Caritas Medical Centre in 1994 and then Chief of Service (Anaesthesia & Operating Theatres) from 1996 to 2006. He was Chief of Service (Anaesthesia) of Princess Margaret Hospital, Yan Chai Hospital, Caritas Medical Centre and Our Lady of Marynoll Hospital from 2006 to 2009.

Apart from clinical anaesthesiology, Joseph’s other passion is quality and patient safety. He was Kowloon West Cluster Clinical Co-ordinator in Risk Management from 2002 to 2009. He has a special interest in medication safety; he has been chairing the Medication Safety Committee of Hospital Authority since 2006.

Dr Lui is also very active in the area of resuscitation training. Currently, he is an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) Regional Faculty for the American Heart Association (AHA). He is also a Pediatric Life Support (PALS) Training Center Faculty for the American Heart Association (AHA).

Dr Lui was appointed Deputy Hospital Chief Executive of Princess Margaret Hospital from 2008 to 2010. He moved to full time management in 2009. Currently, he is the Cluster Chief Executive of Kowloon East Cluster and Hospital Chief Executive of United Christian Hospital, a post he has held since 2010.
