Objectives
Recurrent outbreaks of severe respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS2) pose a global public health emergency. Type I interferon (IFN-I) production is dampened during SARS2 infection. Evading IFN-I-mediated immune activation benefits SARS-CoV2 infection. Exactly how SARS2 and its ORF3a protein suppress IFN-I to facilitate viral replication and pathogenesis remains to be elucidated.
