Objectives
1 The primary hypothesis is that pre-procedural mouth rinsing significantly reduces the prevalence of respiratory pathogens in saliva; and that the reduction in the prevalence of respiratory pathogens in saliva following pre-procedural mouth rinsing significantly varies with respect to the three pre-procedural mouth rinses recommended by the HKSAR Department of Health. 2 Secondary Hypotheses (1): Pre-procedural mouth rinsing significantly reduces the prevalence of respiratory pathogens in the air in the dental setting (environmental air samples); and that the reduction of respiratory pathogens varies with respect to the three pre-procedural mouth rinses recommended by the HKSAR Department of Health. 3 Secondary Hypotheses (2): Pre-procedural mouth rinsing significantly reduces the prevalence of respiratory pathogens on worksurfaces in the dental setting (environmental swabbed surfaces) ; and that the reduction of respiratory pathogens varies with respect to the three pre-procedural mouth rinses recommended by the HKSAR Department of Health. 4 Secondary Hypotheses (3): Patient’s acceptance of pre-procedural mouth rinsing to mitigate against the potential of contamination from aerosols generated in the dental setting is high, and that there is no significant difference in patience preference or acceptance of mouthwashes recommend by the HKSAR Department of Health for pre-procedural mouth rinsing.
