Objectives
Objectives: (1) optimization of a fully automatic algorithm for the design of dental prosthesis by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology which enables the realization of computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM); (2) randomized controlled trial (RCT) with 2-year follow-up on single dental crown restorations by utilizing the AI algorithm. Hypothesis to be tested: No difference is observed in the clinical performance between dental prosthesis designed by the AI algorithm and dental prosthesis designed by technicians using CAD software. Design and subjects: The study is a double-blinded randomized controlled clinical trial. Eligible patients who are in need of single crown restorative treatment in the posterior region, will be included. Instruments: Patients are evaluated by grading according to the World Dental Federation (FDI) criteria, structure integrity and marginal gap recording by optical computer tomography (OCT), and digital impression by intraoral scanners (IOS). Interventions: Participants are randomly divided into two groups (n=25). Crown design is completed by the fully automatic algorithm for group AI and by technicians using CAD software for group CAD Main outcome measures: Primary outcome variables are the fracture of material or tooth and loss of retention. Secondary outcome variables refer to the FDI criteria. Data analysis: Chi-square test for categorical FDI criteria, 2-way ANOVA or Friedman 2-way ANOVA for values of marginal gap and dental wear, Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cohen’s kappa statistic will be used. Expected results: The clinical performance of AI-designed restorations will not be inferior to those designed by technicians using CAD software.
