Objectives
Cardiovascular disease remains a major cause of death even though we know the main risk factors, namely, smoking, hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia and diabetes. In this era of personalised (precision) medicine and big data, a deeper understanding of the causes of cardiovascular disease is possible. Moreover, the risk factors in China are subtly different from those in western populations. The Hong Kong Cardiovascular Risk Factor Prevalence Study (CRISPS) began 23 years ago and yielded much insights into the natural history of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular complications. In this joint proposal between the University of Hong Kong and Shenzhen Sun Yat-Sen Cardiovascular Hospital, a cohort of men and women in Shenzhen will be prospectively followed-up using CRISPS as a model. In the first phase lasting two years, 2000 participants will be recruited. Their baseline cardiovascular risk will be assessed. The novelty of this proposal lies in the use of the latest biomarkers made by the Antibody and Immunoassay Service of the University of Hong Kong; and the use of machine learning to develop a more sophisticated model to predict the risk of cardiovascular disease that is more suitable for Chinese and is more personalised.
