Objectives
1 Systematically apply my comprehensive account of just war theory and the ethics of violence to several special issues in just war theory, such as guerrilla warfare, drone warfare, private military companies, targeted killing, autonomous weapons, preventive war, and humanitarian intervention. 2 Demonstrate the scope, limits, and implications of different justifications of the use of force in these special contexts. 3 Clarify the moral status of different types of non-state combatants and new military technology. 4 Draw some general conclusions about the nature of war and recommend an attitude towards war which, while not embracing pacifism, is even more skeptical towards war than much of present-day just war theory.
