Objectives
1 To design, generate, and characterize peptide systems leading to the gas phase formation of stable 3-nitrotyrosyl-containing peptides through ion–molecule reactions of tyrosine-containing peptide radical cations with •NO2; in Year 1. 2 To elucidate the mechanistic, energetic, and dynamic details of the multiple steps involving intermediate radical ion structures prior to their radical recombination reactions, using ion–molecule reactions, low-energy collision-induced dissociation experiments, density functional theory calculations, and Rice–Ramsperger–Kassel–Marcus modeling in combination with surface-induced dissociation experiments; throughout Years 1, 2, and 3. 3 To initiate an exploration of potential relevance to endogenous protein tyrosine nitration; in Years 2 and 3.
