Objectives
1 To examine the scope of electrophiles useful in the phosphine-initiated reaction sequences involving Wittig followed by conjugate reduction. 2 To examine the scope and mechanism of the phosphine oxide-catalyzed conjugate reduction of conjugated polyunsaturated ketones. 3 To examine the application of phosphine-initiated reaction sequences involving Wittig reactions followed by reduction reactions in natural product synthesis. 4 To study the possibility of reaction sequences involving Appel reactions followed by reductive alkylation. 5 To examine the utility of phosphine-initiated reaction sequences involving aza-Wittig and related reactions for the synthesis of amines and amine derivatives.
