AbstractIn this paper I discuss my recent approaches to studying case marking in the field that includes a blend of both experimental and traditional methods of data elicitation. In particular, I discuss the different approaches I have implemented in my recent work with Himalayan languages on variable uses of case markers. These include different tasks such as judgements involving Likert Scale, forced choice, sentence completion and picture description. I discuss how they compare to standard elicitation and the shortcomings of the different methods that I have encountered. Through illustrations with recent work on Nubri, a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in the high Himalayas, I discuss the relative merits of these different methodologies as they bear on my own work on case marking.
