Abstract | Kawasaki disease is the most common acquired heart disease in Hong Kong. Using the database from the Clinical Data Analysis and Reporting System of the Hospital Authority, Hong Kong, which covers > 95% of in-patient care, the epidemiologic features of patients admitted to public hospitals between July 2000 and June 2011 with a diagnosis of Kawasaki disease (International Classifi cation of Diseases Ninth Revision, code 446.1) with or without coronary aneurysms (code 414.11) were reviewed. Over the 11-year period, a total of 2004 patients were reported to have Kawasaki disease. The male-to-female ratio was 1.61:1. The annual incidence was 74 per 100,000 children aged <5 years. The age distribution pattern showed a peak annual incidence of 156/100,000 in infants aged 6 to 12 months. There was no marked seasonal variation, with the proportion of cases in spring and summer being slightly higher than that in autumn and winter (55.1% vs 44.9%). The median hospital stay was 6 days (range 1 to 56). Coronary aneurysms were reported to have occurred at the time of hospital discharge in 7.4% (149/2004) of patients, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.9:1. |
