AbstractOver the last decade, the scale and nature of supplementary private tutoring in Hong Kong has changed in significant ways. More pupils are receiving tutoring, and the types of tutoring that they are receiving have changed. This is partly because the mainstream education system has changed, and therefore the shadow education system has changed. It also reflects changes in the market-place. More tutoring companies have emerged and have marketed their services vigorously. Supply to some extent creates demand; and in the competitive society the pressures on young people have increased. This paper will map dimensions of the changes in Hong Kong, and will consider the features in a comparative perspective. It will be based on data provided by teachers and students in a range of surveys.
