AbstractAMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a heterotrimer composed of a catalytic subunit (α) and two regulatory subunits (β and γ). Each subunit has different isoforms, namely, α1, α2, β1, β2, γ1, γ2 and γ3 encoded by distinct genes, which enable the yielding of 12 possible heterotrimeric complexes.
