Dr. Chong holds a PhD degree in "Psycholinguistics" and "German as a Foreign Language" from the University of Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität). Since joining the University of Hong Kong in 2003, she has integrated in good measure the University’s three pillars including research & innovation, teaching & learning and knowledge exchange and utilized innovative strategies to create best synergies. She teaches courses on diverse topics at all levels across the curriculum. She is one of Hong Kong's foremost Cantonese-Mandarin-German-English scholars in research relating to German language education in an Anglo-Chinese environment. Her involvement as organizer and keynote speaker at the March 2018 international conference on "German as a Foreign Language through Cross-cultural Perspectives" also shows her impact in this field. Her research interests lie in German Language Education in Multi-cultural Contexts, Contrastive Linguistics and Intercultural Studies. She has published articles in leading journals such as "Langenscheidts Deutsch als Fremdsprache", "German as a Foreign Language Journal" and "The Montréal Review" and book chapters in numerous international books. Currently she works on different publications about the cultural impact and didactic concepts of teaching German as a foreign language.
She became involved with the Gender Task Force of the Faculty of Arts as an appointed member representing the SMLC and was a leader on the subcommittee devoted to "Hiring, Retention, and Promotion". She is also a founding member of the Committee on Gender Equality and Diversity and currently leads its Knowledge Exchange and Outreach Subcommittee. For three consecutive years from 2014-2017, she has received Knowledge Exchange Grants for her self-initiated pilot project involving German Programme students at HKU. Dr. Chong is the recipient of the 2015 Arts Faculty Teaching Excellence Award and the 2018 Arts Faculty Knowledge Exchange Award.
