Biography

Magda Nutsa Kobakhidze is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Comparative and International Education in the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong. Her PhD dissertation won prestigious Gail P. Kelly Award 2016/2017 for outstanding doctoral dissertation from the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES), USA. Nutsa's research interests include privatization of education (focus on private supplementary tutoring), comparative and international education, teacher professionalism and identity, sociology of education/economic sociology and methodologies of large-scale international assessments - PISA, PIRLS, TIMSS. Geographical focus of her research comprises Georgia and former Soviet republics, Hong Kong and South East Asia (Cambodia and Myanmar/Burma). Nutsa publishes articles in international peer-reviewed journals and books, and serves as a reviewer for prestigious international journals in comparative and international education. 

Nutsa has extensive leadership and management experience with the Ministry of Education of Georgia, international organizations and educational institutions in multicultural contexts. In 2016 she served as Assistant Conference Manager of Comparative and International Education Society’s (CIES) 2016 Annual conference in Vancouver, Canada. Prior to joining the University of Hong Kong in 2012, she served as a National Research Coordinator of the international study PIRLS in Georgia. Currently, she leads a cross-national project in Myanmar titled as 'Intersections of Equity, Quality and Corruption: Shadow Education Provided by Teachers in Myanmar'.

Nutsa holds a Master’s degree in International Education Policy from International Educational Development Program at Teachers College, Columbia University, USA and PhD in Comparative Education from the University of Hong Kong.
