Short Biography:

Dr Ryan Au Yeung joined the School of Public Health, the University of Hong Kong after his MPH training (with distinction) in 2008 and PhD training in 2012 at the University of Hong Kong.

His primary research focus is non-communicable diseases, including health effects of moderate alcohol use, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. As an advocate for triangulation of evidence, he is interested in using different methods to segregate correlation from causation. He is particularly interested in the use of Mendelian randomization (MR) to identify causes of diseases using various data sources such as large Biobanks (individual data level MR) and summary statistics from genome wide association studies (2 sample MR). He is a regular journal reviewer for various international journals such as British Medical Journal, American Journal of Epidemiology, and Emerging Infectious Diseases (statistical reviewer). He was awarded American Journal of Epidemiology (AJE) 2015 Article of the Year for his paper evaluating the role of moderate alcohol use in QT intervals among Chinese using Mendelian randomization. He was a visiting fellow at Bristol Medical School: Population Health Sciences, University of Bristol, supported by the Health and Medical Research Fund Research Fellowship Scheme on Mendelian randomization from 2016-17.

He is the coordinator of Advanced Epidemiological Methods I of the School’s Master of Public Health programme, which covers advanced methods relevant to causal inference such as missing data, Mendelian randomization, and the use of directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). He is also the tutor of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) of the MBBS curriculum, which covers relevant aspects such as critical appraisal of identified evidence. Recently, he has played a major role in the curriculum development of the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Global Heath and Development (BASc(GHD)).
