Biography

My principal research interests are in the application of epidemiological and economic techniques to answer questions relating to health care. After moving from the Department of Public Health in the University of Glasgow in 1994, I formed the Department's Health Services Research Group (HSRG) which brought together the Department's activities in health services research, economics and informatics. We integrate the HSRG's activities with those of the Epidemiology and Public Health and the Biostatistics groups in the Department. We have therefore investigated the cost of such risk factors as smoking, passive smoking and air pollution and the cost-effectiveness of screening for cervical cancer. We are currently examining the burden of disease due to influenza and the cost-effectiveness of vaccination as well as developing locally based quality weights to allow the calculation of quality-adjusted life years in economic studies.
