Dr Wang, John Junwen 王俊文
Dr. Junwen John Wang is currently an Associate Professor at Centre for Genomic Sciences, the University of Hong Kong LKS Faculty of Medicine. He received his undergraduate and graduate trainings in China, and obtained his PhD from the University of Washington and MS from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Center for Bioinformatics, University of Pennsylvania, and a staff scientist at the National Institute of Cancer of USA before he moved to Hong Kong in 2008. He received outstanding young researcher award from HKU in year 2011-12, and was among the top 1% cited researchers by ISI essential citation in years 2013, 2014.
Dr. Wang's main research interests are bioinformatics and computational genomics. Currently, his team focuses on two areas: 1) develop algorithms/tools to predict promoters, enhancers, and to infer regulatory networks/modules from high-throughput OMICs data. Examples are ChIP-Array and CMGRN that incorporate ChIP-seq and transcriptomic data to infer TF-centred regulatory networks, ProteoMirExpress that infers microRNA-centred regulatory networks, and EpiRegNet that infers epigenetic regulatory networks. His team discovered the co-evolutionary relationship between transcription factor and its binding sites, and is using this information to infer gene networks (Co-Evo and DDGni). 2) develop methods, databases and web servers to analyze (FaSD, FaSD-Somatic), annotate (GWASdb, dbPSHP) genomic, transcriptomic and epigenetic data (GWASrap, GWAS3D) generated from next-generation sequencing platforms. Integrate multi-dimensional data to infer, annotate and re-prioritize genetic variants and find their association with diseases, such as breast and lung cancers, diabetes, heart and developmental disorders.
Dr. Wang and his team are also actively collaborating with local and international researchers in applying bioinformatics for biomedical discovery, and welcome new collaborations that answer significant biological questions or advance methodology development.
