Abstract | Contingency theories suggest that better performance is associated with more accurate managerial perceptions of the external circumstances confronted by their organizations. It is therefore important to explore the potential determinants of differences between alternative measures of organizational environments. We formalize and test Boyd, Dess and Rasheed𠏋 (1993) model of the determinants of measurement difference on archival and perceptual measures of the environmental complexity and dynamism faced by English local governments in 2001. The results show that managerial networking, collaborative governance, organizational age and financial slack reduce the gap between archival and perceptual measures of the environment. |
